About Saga River Cruises

Saga River Cruises operates two vessels -- Sprit of the Danube and Sprit of the Rhine. The vibe, decor and restrictions (over-50s only), is very similar to the ocean vessels operated by Saga Cruises.

Saga River Cruises Tips, Activities, and Overview

Who goes on Saga River cruise ships?

Saga firmly targets over-50 cruisers, although a companion can travel if they're over 40. In reality, most passengers are retired and over 65 and almost all are British, with a smattering of North Americans and Australians who enjoy the vibe of a ship geared to British tastes. Saga is especially friendly to solo travelers, with accommodations dedicated to singles. Expect fellow travelers to be relatively well-heeled (this is a high-end cruise) and to have a sense of curiosity and an interest in good food, culture and the arts.

Do I have to dress up on a Saga River cruise?

Yes. There are one to two formal nights on every seven-night voyage, and dressing for dinner on these is one of the reasons people book. Expect long dresses and lots of sparkle for ladies and tuxedo with bow tie for men -- although a dark suit with tie is acceptable. On other nights, the dress code is elegant casual, with no jacket and tie required but an expectation that people will make an effort in the evenings.

Is everything free on Saga River cruises?

No, but a lot is. Saga's River Cruises operate on an all-inclusive or full-board basis. All include a complimentary door-to-door chauffeur service, or Saga can arrange car parking near the port, domestic flights or standard class rail/coach travel. Also included are at least three included excursions and all gratuities on board Spirit of the Rhine and Spirit of the Danube, return flights and transfers and travel insurance with up to £5m coronavirus cover. All Saga River Cruises also enjoy free Wi-Fi, a welcome drinks reception and Captain’s Dinner. You will however, pay for bar drinks.

What are Saga River’s most popular activities?

Daytimes on a Saga River cruises will mostly be spent on excursions, however is you choose to stay onboard you can always curl up with a book in the library lounge, a smaller version of the popular libraries on Saga's ocean ships. The large sun deck has a hot tub, barbecue, deck games and plenty of room for deckchairs and loungers. There is also a small gym. In the evening expect guest lecturers, theme cruises and bands.

Why go with Saga River?

  • Impressive cuisine, including a menu by celebrity chef Nick Nairn
  • Traditional English tea served every afternoon.
  • Door-to-door chauffeur service.

Best for: Foodies over 50 with a desire to see the world in comfort and style

Not for: Families or anybody looking for wild nightlife

Saga River Cruises Cruiser Reviews

on the whole very good

The all inclusive drinks are a bit limited different local wine each day but did include the cocktail of the day which kept changing so this was fine for us Meals Wise the chef and related staff did an excellent job ,breakfast had a great choice and most meals there was ⅔ choices you could also go into the restaurant to have a sit down meal at lunchtime or there was a lighter option in the bar/lounge which had some amazing vegetables soups salad and cheese options. We were a tad concerned and had a perception that the river cruise might be dominated by older less able people but decided to go with an open mind and we are so glad we did.Read More
